A friend of mine, Chun, is looking to build an earthship home, meaning a bush house made from recycled and/or natural materials which is disconnected from the grid. Ro who lives down the NSW south coast has one such home and kindly offered to host us for a night and to answer all Chun’s questions.
This gave me an excellent opportunity to experiment with campfire cooking. I made smoky eggplant dip, charred capsicum slices, campfire stew and roasted veggies. This post is about the delicious, amazing campfire stew.
Lasagne is delicious, but too often I find vegetarian lasagne is actually just roast veggies arranged in layers. This veggie lasagne is different. It is ‘meaty’ and very much reminiscent of traditional lasagne. You won’t be disappointed! (more…)
Sometimes I feel like cooking and I know what I want to make, but I can’t be bothered going to the supermarket. This results in the compromise of cooking, but with the ingredients already in the house rather than the ones I want. Not so long ago this resulted in sweet potato and three-lentil dahl. (more…)
Every month or so I have a bulk cooking session and prepare copious amounts of food for work lunches which I then freeze. Most people are familiar with chilli con carne, a Mexican dish of mince meat, tomatoes and beans. Con carne is Spanish for with meat. As a herbivore, I decided to make chilli sin carne, or without meat.

This year for Easter my friend Sol and I took a trip down to the NSW South Coast to visit his mum, Ro. As has become customary when I visit there was a lot of cooking, including pumpkin dahl.
Ro lives in a beautiful off-the-grid mud brick house on a property known as Gentle Valley. It is a calming sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It is a great opportunity to unwind and recharge, and for me that means reading and cooking. (more…)
